The first time I saw Ram Patten, I had just started going to the gym. Nervous and with a plan in mind, I was determined to achieve my fitness goals. Suddenly, a towering figure walked through the door, radiating an energy that filled the room. Ram was everything I aspired to be—a king, a hunter, and a source of inspiration.
I vividly remember watching him effortlessly bench press 120kg, lifting it as if it weighed nothing. I thought to myself, "This guy is incredible!"
It took me nearly a year to muster the courage to speak to Ram. I wanted to absorb some of his confidence, something I desperately lacked at the time. As I progressed in my gym routine, I finally worked up to bench pressing 100kg. On the day I aimed to achieve this milestone, Ram was there, on the bench opposite mine.
Seizing the moment, I asked Ram for a spot. Not only did he spot me, but he also guided me on proper form, sharing his energy and expertise. That day, I knew I needed to surround myself with people like him.
Curious about Ram's story, I learned he was a veteran Royal Marine Commando and a Team GB powerlifter. His journey was truly inspiring.
If you're seeking motivation, adopting a mindset like Ram's is the way to go. I always believed powerlifting was a young man's game, but Ram proved me wrong. Despite not having age on his side, he aimed to become the British champion and hold the bench press record.
Then, a setback occurred—Ram had a full knee reconstruction. For many, this would have been the end. But not for Ram. Training relentlessly with crutches, he achieved success that left me in awe. A few months later, he not only won the competition but also set a new British bench press record at 120kg. His achievement was nothing short of incredible.
However, Ram faced another challenge when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer, requiring major surgery. What inspired me most was Ram's determination to train right up until his surgery. His vision and goals remained unwavering.
Though his surgery didn't go as planned, leading to a longer recovery, Ram's resilience shone through. With the all-clear from cancer, he returned to the gym, focused on achieving his next powerlifting goal—winning the championship and breaking his own record.
I have no doubt that Ram will achieve this. He exemplifies that with determination, you can overcome any obstacle and reach your goals.
Good luck, Ram! You're going to nail it!
